Can chrysanthemums withstand a degree of frost?

15/05/2023

Chrysanthemums are true autumn plants. Anyone thinking of autumn also thinks of the colourful Mum plants that add a little brightness to this time of the year. Chrysanthemums are very popular during September and October. But what do you do with your chrysanthemum when temperatures drop below freezing? Can these colourful ball-shaped plants cope with the freezing temperatures or should you take steps to protect your plant?

Chrysanthemums are half-hardy, which means they can easily withstand a degree of frost, but when it turns really cold they struggle.

Do you want to keep your plant over winter? Then it’s best to cut the chrysanthemum plant back completely and plant it in the garden in a place, where it is well protected but catches plenty of sunlight. When periods of heavy frost are expected, cover the plants with straw or dry leaves for extra protection. When the weather gets milder, remove the leaves so the plants can take advantage of the better weather.

With a bit of luck, next year you will have a beautiful flowering chrysanthemum in your garden again.
