How do you look after your Belgian Mum plant?

18/10/2019

Congratulations, you have just bought a Belgian Mum plant. But what do you do next? Read below what’s best for your newly purchased plant and find out how you can enjoy this colourful fragrant “princess” for as long as possible.

Belgian Mums like a lot of light. Choose a place  where your Belgian Mum can enjoy the sunshine and avoid places where there is only shade. Water your Belgian Mum plant on a regular basis, but NEVER in excess. A chrysanthemum can survive a short dry period, provided it doesn’t last too long. On the other hand, a chrysanthemum absolutely doesn’t like wet feet. Too much water is definitely out of the question. We recommend watering your Mum plant two to three times a week. Keep in mind that as flowering progresses, the need for water will also become less. When watering, make sure that you pour the water onto the soil and not on the flowers or leaves.

Don’t assume that your plant doesn’t need any water after it has just been raining. Because, when it rains, the water often runs down along the ball-shaped plant, as a result of which the water doesn’t reach the soil in the flower pot.

You don’t have a watering can available to water your Mums? Then fill the sink with three centimetres of water and put your plant in it and leave it there for half an hour to soak up enough water. You can then put the plant back in its flower pot and return it to its place. This will allow your Belgian Mum to stay fresh for another two days.  For the rest, a chrysanthemum has hardly any other requirements. If you take good care of your chrysanthemum you will be able to enjoy its abundantly flowering splendour for at least four to six weeks. A must-have for every garden, terrace, conservatory or sunny place/spot in the house.
