Pollen-free Mum plants

20/07/2021

Did you know that our Primo Sunny and Primo Pistache do not produce pollen and are therefore pollen-free?  An ideal patio plant for people who suffer from hay fever.

Decorating your patio with flowers and plants is a wonderful pastime. But hay fever can really spoil the fun. Spring is the time of year when there is a lot of pollen in the air and many people suffer from allergic reactions. Chrysanthemums generally bloom in autumn, but the colourful Mum plants can trigger similar reactions too. Fortunately, there are also Mum plants that are pollen-free  and therefore ideal for people who suffer from hay fever.

Just like mammals, for example, plants need an egg cell and sperm cells to form seeds. In plants, the egg cell is in the pistil of the flower. The sperm cells are formed on the stamens of the flower. Usually both are present on the same flower.

Several different flower types are possible when it comes to chrysanthemums. On the one hand you have the daisy-like (single) flower types and on the other hand you have the decorative flower types. Single flower types have a lot of pistils and stamens. A decorative flower type has pistils, but only a limited number of stamens. Our Primo Pistache and Sunny are an exception within the category of decorative flower types and therefore do not produce pollen.
